About Us
Call Kathleen Rose Davis (617) 823-9079
Our organization is based on the philosophies of Benjamin Rose, Sr. Benny
Rose believed that all children should have the opportunity to play any team
sport, but his favorite was baseball. He was the fastest pitcher in New
Bedford in the 60's and 70's until his untimely death in 1973. He was the
Recreation Director, Director of Model Cities, and the bail commissioner.
He worked tirelessly for the youth of New Bedford throughout the entire city.
He believed in sports, music, and education was the key for all children to
succeed as adults. He did not graduate from high school and had to quit
school to help support his brothers and sisters. What he accomplished
without an education was very hard work and frustrating for him because he knew
he was limited. His dream was to give the opportunity to all children that
were in the same financial situation that he grew up. He felt that
children needed to the lessons that organized team sports provide. We would
welcome the opportunity to earn your trust and deliver you the best league in
the city of New Bedford.
I am an educator and the daughter of the late Ben Rose. I want to give back to
my community what it has provided for me, given my father's drive and hard work.
Many of us minorities in the area were given the knowledge that education was
the key to success and many of us went on to college. Unfortunately with his
death in 1973, the community leaders were not able to fight the wars on the
streets of the city, like he did! New Bedford is ready and so are the
communities. Many young lives have been tragically lost by gang violence, AIDS,
poverty and it's time to take this area of the city back from the dangers of the
street life and violence. I am aware that many people from all over the country
want the same. In this mission though, are many memories of life when it was
good. There are many people in this community that remember. When they got back
the ball field, many people just stopped their cars, got excited, came over and
shared their stories of the past with my Dad and how he touched their lives.
This project is very emotionally heavy for the people in this community and
around the city of New Bedford. The BRREC would like to get the building where
we shared all the good times. We want our children to experience what we did
back then in a new a different way. I have gone down to the ball field and just
yelled to the adults, "we got it back", and they all cheer simultaneously like
they want to dance. Many other communities and people of all races were touched
by him and they want to step in and help. Out of all the areas of the entire
city, this is where the whole city came together without racial barriers and
developed relationships that were so close. His death affected so many people,
as if we were one big family when everyone just separates to deal with the pain.
They need to get back strong because they outnumber the negative people in the
city. Please help us try to restore the city to be again a vibrant and a
wonderful place to live. We may not make all the difference but just to have
people in that area to breathe life into it again would mean so much to them.
